Educational gifts that promote confidence in kids

Gifts are a great way to help kids feel like confident learners! If you’ve ever set a fitness goal and purchased new workout clothes or set a work-related goal and bought a new course, then you know what I mean. It made you feel like you were playing the part before reaching the goal. Kids want to feel like scholars. So, I’ve put together a few toys, games, and gifts that you might want to add to your child’s holiday list to boost their confidence.

A magazine subscription

Do you read magazines? Kids will feel grown up with their very own magazine subscription. You can’t go wrong with Highlights! or National Geographic for Kids. Other great options include Bravery and Honest History.

Games and toys

Take the homework feel out of learning with family games. Zingo is a great one for beginning readers. Once kids are writing, Scattergories and Pictionary are lots of fun. Boggle and Bananagrams sneak in spelling practice. Finally, Kid-O’s Magnatab is helpful when learning letter formation. It comes in both upper and lowercase, print and cursive.

Bookmarks and reading highlighters

These adorable animal bookmarks are crowd-pleasers. For goal-setters, consider the bookmarks that track minutes read. For beginning readers and kids working on fluency, these highlighters are helpful!

Plan a date to a local bookstore with a gift card

Purchase a gift card to your local independent bookstore to support small businesses during this difficult time. Mask up and plan a date to look at books and let your kids explore. They might just find a new favorite author!

Journals

Writing isn’t so bad when you can write anything you want and forget about spelling. Check out this list of my favorites.

Fun pens, pencils, and pencils grips

A comfortable pencil grip will help prevent later writing frustration. These pencil grips make writing fun while helping to improve pencil grip. Scented pencils can inspire writing also.

Diversify your shelves to peak interest

Adults often only want to read if the book appeals to our interests or we recognize ourselves in the characters, and kids feel the same way! The Eye See Me book box delivers the best African American children’s books each month. The box is run by an independent bookstore and will be coming out with an adult book subscription soon! Little Feminist Book Club recognized that only 31% of children’s books feature a female character and 13% feature a person of color. Their box subscription works to bring you books that fill these gaps. Finally, KidArtLit provides opportunities for you to connect with your child through art and books and is a great one for crafty kids.

Books that drive you crazy

Buy your kids the books that make you cringe but that they love to read, from Diary of A Wimpy KidDog Man to Barbie. If they are reading, then they are practicing. ;)

Your Childhood Favorite Book

Share your favorite book at bedtime. Kids love imagining their caretaker as a child, and you will enjoy rereading your favorite books. When you are happy, they are happy. ;) Did you read Choose Your Own Adventure or The Boxcar Children? My favorites were From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and the Ramona .

Audible Subsciption

Listening to audiobooks allows kids to read books that are above their reading and grade level. This improves comprehension and vocabulary. If you can track down the hardcopy and have your child read along, this will simultaneously improve decoding and fluency skills.
